Abstract

The article investigates the issues related to the contents of the professional competence of a teacher of choreographic disciplines in higher education institutions along with the significance of this phenomenon under study in the process of carrying out pedagogical activity of a teacher-choreographer. The author considers the knowledge and the skills of a teacher of choreographic disciplines as the basic components of his professional competence. The issue of a teacher’s self-actualization as a key to the successful process of his professional development is outlined. In the article, the author distinguishes between such concepts as competency, competence, and professional competence of a teacher of choreographic disciplines. The author offers the following definition to the professional competence of a teacher of choreographic disciplines: it is a specific pedagogical phenomenon that is determined by the particular features of artistic and pedagogical activity, uniqueness of its objectives, the preference of artistic and creative forms of practical work and specific methods of art education. A teacher-choreographer must combine such characteristics as:director-educator and a tutor-ballet master, must expertly support students’ efforts and encourage their initiative. Thus in the process of choreographic activity, teacher’s professional competence should be based on the following requirements: – carrying out artistic and aesthetic education of the student youth on a humanistic basis; – formation of the most important components of aesthetic development, which serve as a vital condition for fostering their aesthetic culture; – application of methods that stimulate improvisational activity and its creative manifestations; – formation of the values based attitude to the art of choreography, whose basis is determined by values oriented guidelines, tastes and ideals; – development of a full-fledged, mentally and physically free personality of a student; – development of artistic and creative abilities, that is: aesthetic taste, imagination, thinking, fostering interest in choreographic activity, culture of behavior, positive attitude towards each other, etc.
