THE ROLE OF FILMS IN THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS’ FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the consideration of cinema as an effective means of studying the English language. The concept of foreign language competence has been outlined. The influence of video materials on the formation of this competence has been traced. It has been emphasized that videos, in particular, films are necessary components of a modern lesson. Thanks to films, students hear the intonation and pronunciation of words, observe people’s behavior during communication, learn new words and expressions. Cinema helps students to expand their worldview, promotes their development of imagination, fantasy, and attention. Movies increase students’ interest and motivation to studying. They successfully learn new vocabulary, phrases or consolidate acquired knowledge. Watching positive videos improves the emotional state of students, that is important during the wartime. The article draws our attention to the fact that when choosing films for the lesson, some attention should be paid to the level of students’ knowledge, the relevance of the video to the topic of the lesson, the complexity of the material, the actuality of the topic, the duration of the video and the presence of subtitles. Three stages of working with films at the lesson such as pre-demonstration, demonstration, post-demonstration have been considered. The pre-demonstration stage involves working with phonetics and phonemic hearing. It also helps to improve vocabulary and grammar. The demonstration stage involves watching the film. The post-demonstration stage refers to the development of oral and written speech. Some attention has been paid to the fact that you can use feature, popular science, documentary, educational films during the learning process. You can choose fragments with a duration of several minutes or more or show the whole ones.
