TERMINOLOGICAL PHRASES WITH THE CORE COMPONENT «KRIEG» AND THEIR TRANSLATION INTO UKRAINIAN

Abstract

Due to russia’s aggression and military support for Ukraine from partner countries, the study of terminological phrases with the KRIEG core component is becoming increasingly important both for language development and for facilitating mutual understanding between specialists. In modern linguistics, the recognition of phrases as terms is an indisputable fact. The military terminology of the German language is characterized by the use of not only monolingual but also complex linguistic units for nomination. This is due to the desire to achieve precision in the concept. To select terms from the factual material, we paid attention primarily to the lexical component of Krieg. While translating terms from German into Ukrainian, we took into account whether the terms in both languages have the same equivalents, as well as possible differences in the armed forces of both countries; we tried to find the option that most transparently conveys the meaning of the term and took into account possible figurative meanings and expressive connotations. After conducting a comprehensive analysis and translation of terminological phrases with the key component “KRIEG” based on modern German-language online publications, we found that two-component terminological phrases best meet the needs of professional communication, as they do not complicate understanding and, at the same time, convey the key characteristics of a particular concept. Therefore, in our opinion, they are the most common. It seems that the use of many components in terms is driven by the desire to clearly define a complex terminological concept, with linguistic means becoming secondary to a clear definition. The translation of the analyzed terminological phrases is mostly done by literal translation, by rearranging components, or by using phrases with the preservation of the structure of the terms. In some cases, it is done by using adverbial phrases or by omitting or replacing certain elements of the phrase. However, the accuracy of the translation should be checked by comparing the meaning of the translated term with the meaning of the entire text.
